What’s a WordPress plugin?

A plugin is a small piece of software that’s native to WordPress, that you can add to your website to perform a specific function to enhance your website’s capabilities. The most popular WordPress plugins usually help improve a website’s:

  • Security,
  • Promotion,
  • Analytics and
  • Comment handling

Plugins are continually being updated so make sure your version is always the most up to date! Updating your plugin is really easy too! If there’s a new update, there’ll be a coloured circle with a number that pops up next to the plugins link in your dashboard sidebar. The number represents the number of plugins that have an update available, so just simply click through and update whichever plugin has an updated version. Press the update button to download and it’ll update automatically!

Here’s my top 10 WordPress plugins that I use for my websites and love to bits!

1. Akismet

Akismet checks all of your comments to determine whether they’re spam or not. All the comments they deem as ‘spam’ gets filtered into a separate folder and if it was accidentally  marked as spam, you can change it’s status and unmark it as spam, but a legit comment.

2. Sumome

This is almost a 7-in-1 plugin and it a complete monster for capturing leads! It features different functions such as the welcome mat, scroll box, content analytics, smart bar, list builder and more. All forms are completely customisable, mobile optimised and integrates with all the major email marketing services like Mailchimp, Aweber, Infusionsoft and more. In no time, you’ll be turning your website into a lead generating machine.

3. WPtouch Mobile Plugin

Earlier this year in February, Google announced that they would change their ranking algorithm in April, to penalise websites that were not mobile optimised. The world gasped. But with this handy plugin, even if your theme is not mobile optimised, just activate this and it’ll enable a mobile friendly version of your site that passes the Google mobile test. The plugin is customisable in many aspects of its appearance and still lets visitors view the desktop version of your site too.

4. Yoast SEO

This plugin makes improving your SEO easy and intuitive. Packed with features such as page analysis, XML site maps made easy, RSS optimisation, breadcrumbs and more – there’s a wealth of features to explore and implement to boost your SEO to a new level.

5. Mashshare Share Buttons

Stylish share buttons that includes share counts for the main social media channels (the paid version links up to more social media channels). It loads quickly, is customisable and offers the use of short codes – overall a great little plugin to implement.

6. Click To Tweet

Addicted to Twitter and wanna make it easy for your fans to easily share your kickass content? This little plugin allows you to highlight key quotes from your blog posts, making it ridiculously easy for your fans to tweet and share your nuggets of gold with others.

7. Google analytics

Although technically not a WordPress specific ‘plugin’ this is the granddaddy of all when it comes to capturing data to help you analyse what’s popular and driving traffic on your website. Although it’s a little daunting to navigate your way though (I don’t think the way they’ve laid it out is very intuitive…) with a bit of helpful googling, there are some pretty decent step by step tutorials to help you set up and connect your google analytics to your website. I like Hubspost’s guide to installing google analytics.

8. Pin it

Make pinning your beautiful images easy for your fans by installing this plugin. Whenever you hover over an image, a ‘pin it’ image will appear, allowing you to click on the image and the pinterest pop up box will bounce up – letting you choose where you want to pin the image.

9. Thrive Leads

Don’t like the idea of paying an on-going fee for services and having your lead boxes look exactly the same as everyone else? ThriveLeads is your WordPress solution, whereby you only pay a 1 time fee and you get a year’s worth of continuous plugin updates to gather leads. After the year is up, you only pay 50% to ‘renew’ your membership to keep getting plugin updates. But even if you choose not to renew your license to get future plugin updates, you can keep using the plugin software. No strings attached.

10. WP Super Cache

Want a plugin that makes your website load faster and make the search engines love your website even more? This is it!
